How Often Should I Clean My Gutters?

How Often Should I Clean My Gutters?

How Often Should I Clean My Gutters? We could answer this question with ‘How Long Is A Piece Of String?’ Depending on the kind of environment you live in and whether or not you have Gutter Guards installed, gutters can need to be cleaned between 2-200 times per year.

How Often Should I clean my Gutters?

While Gutters are essential to directing rain water away from the house, their position means they accumulate dry leaves and other debris causing then to become easily clogged. When there is too much debris in the gutter it traps water causing the gutter to rust and break away. Additionally, if the water does not drain from the gutter it can weigh down and break.  By cleaning out your gutters regularly you save yourself the time, money and hassle of having to deal with broken gutters.

What Are The Benefits Of Keeping My Gutters Clean?

Beyond broken gutters there is a lot more damage that can be done to your home if you fail to keep your gutters clean. The accumulation of dry leaves and debris in a clogged gutter will prevent water from flowing down the gutter into the down spout. This means that excess rain water will pour out of the sides of the gutter and on to the siding of the house and into the landscaping.

Rusty gutters (from sitting water) will need to be replaced- an expensive and easily avoidable process.

Additionally, gutters that flood from overflowing can cause issues as deep as your home’s foundations as water in the wrong place leeches down and damages them. This is a very expensive thing to fix.

So How Often Should I Clean My Gutters To Avoid All Of This?

Cleaning Gutters regularly will stop all of the above problems and prolong the life of your gutters and roof.  Gutters should be cleaned a minimum of twice annually and in the right season. There is no use cleaning your gutters in mid-Autumn as all the leaves are falling- it will become a daily chore!

Clean your Gutters at the Beginning of Autumn to ensure they don’t become too clogged as the season progresses. Then check them again at the end of the season.

Clean them again in Spring when it’s not too hot. No-one wants to be on their roof come mid-summer.
