Your Autumn gutter protection action plan

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

As the cooler months approach we enter what we call our peak gutter season.

Leaves start to shed from trees and winds pick up and fly debris onto your roof and into your gutters.

Put simply – gutters without The Leaf Man Gutter Guard will become blocked.

So what does this mean for your gutters and why do you need gutter protection?

When gutters are installed on a new home or when you have old gutter replaced at your existing home they generally do not come with gutter guard installed. This leaves you gutter exposed to early ageing and deterioration. Gutters can also become blocked and clogged after just one storm!

Clogged and dirty gutters lead to rust and deterioration and can create major problems for your roof and home.

Gutters clogged with leaves & debris stay wet for exceptionally long periods. This moisture severely degrades the protective finish of the guttering and begins the corrosion of your gutters.

Not visible from the outside of your home – what is also happening is that the overflow of water that cannot flow through the clogged guttering doesn’t just fall onto the ground. It flows back into your roof cavity. Too often the damage of rotting timber isn’t noted until it’s too late.

Clean gutters that are protected with The Leaf Man Gutter Guard will prevent:

 1.    Overflowing gutters that leak water onto paths

2.    Rotting roof timbers which can lead to leaks through your ceiling

3.    Dirty tank water

4.    Burning embers in the case of Bush fire igniting with collected gutter debris

 Quick Autumn Action Plan

Check your invoice if you have recently had gutter guard installed to insure it is steel gutter guard and not plastic which can burn, warp and deteriorate

  1. Have a chat with your neighbours to ensure that they will be caring for their winter garden
  2. Cut back loose branches form trees and regularly rake dry leaves form your gardens. Loose leaves fly and can make it to your roof
  3. Contact The Leaf Man for a complimentary gutter guard quote – for the ultimate gutter guard protection

What style of roof does your home have?

A close friend enlisted a few people to help with some pre sale maintenance on her home. When we offered to clean her gutters she asked “Does my style of roof have gutters?”  It got us thinking here at The Leaf Man Australia factory about how many Australians don’t know what style of roof they have, or how gutter protection could increase the value of their home.

Below are descriptions of the most common roof styles and how The Leaf Man Gutter Guard fits perfectly – of course if you have any questions, or don’t think your roof fits into one of these, feel free to give our factory a call for more information.

Choosing the right gutter guard company for your home

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

You wouldn’t have found gutter guard on many peoples wish list for Christmas. But you will find many holiday home-owners putting off the dreaded task of cleaning out their gutters. Rather than climb that rickety ladder, you may decide to finally invest in a solution. But now you have another problem. Which gutter protection for your home?

Here are some steps to make it easier for you.

1. Choose a reputable company that has been in business for at least 10 years
2. Choose a solid product that will last the distance.
3. Choose a product manufactured in Australia – products made off-shore can vary greatly in quality with each despatch.
4. Choose qualified and insured installers – ask to sight their insurances. All installers who work on a roof must have a height safety card, public liability, workers compensation. If they’re not insured – neither are you – and you may be liable for their injury.

Make sure the company they represent stands behind them. Here today gone tomorrow companies with no responsibilities for preferred installers say it all!
5. Choose a product that suits your requirements – not “the best” product which happens to be their only product! All roofs are not created equal and most require exacting fitting.
6. Be wary of companies that copy others. Similar names and similar products all reek of disgruntled ex-employees who have issues – don’t make them yours!
7. And be wary of companies who insist on a maintenance program. That’s a great revenue – maker for them but a hole in the pocket for you!
8. By the same token be wary of those sales people who criticise competitors. Again – you are looking for quality and integrity of product and personal and company.
9. Don’t be pressured into ‘signing up today for that great deal”.
10. Finally, take your time, test the product and test the company and have a restful summer.

How Did Santa Go Landing His Sleigh On Your Roof?

Saturday, December 25th, 2010

Santa told us here at The Leaf Man Australia that there were some very dirty gutters indeed, as well as some slippery roofs and dodgy roof tiles. But if you haven’t got experience in roof landing and walking, like Santa, then make sure you call in a professional to get those gutters clean and debris free ready for summer.
Recently our Sydney and Melbourne teams worked closely with local communities to get their gutters and roofs ready for summer’s potential dangers.
It is essential that you and your family are prepared. The message from the Rural Fire Service is to:

Prepare. Act. Survive.

The Leaf Man has been helping Australians to protect their homes from bush fire for over 14 years.

How does The Leaf Man Gutter Guard help to protect my home from bush fire?
The Leaf Man Gutter Guard is installed on to your gutter and has been designed to leave no gaps between your gutter and your roof line. It ensures that your roof line is sealed off and in turn helps to protect your roof as well as your gutters from flying embers.

What makes The Leaf Man gutter Guard the best option for my home?
The Leaf Man Gutter Guard has been granted from the CSIRO a zero flammability certificate – this means that there is 0 chances that it will become flammable in a fire – unlike other gutter guard products made from aluminum or plastic. The Leaf Man Gutter Guard will not ignite or melt under intense heat and is anti-corrosive. Hot embers landing on The Leaf Man Gutter Guard will simply burn out.
Of course the intensity of a bushfire is hard to predict – Protecting your gutters is one step of your families bush fire survival plan.

The Leaf Man Australia puts safety first

The Leaf Man Australia puts safety first

Whilst reading the local paper The Hills Shire Times this week – I came across an all too familiar story. A gentleman in Kenshurst had just fallen from his roof whilst attempting to clean his gutters.
It’s like the car crash stories that make you think “Not again, when will people learn?” It’s one of those situations that you look back on and think ‘Why did I do that?”
How many times have you or a family member climbed onto the roof to clean the gutters? (not often enough I hear some of you groan). Like with most jobs, it’s best to leave it to the professionals.
So I thought I would put together a few reasons why cleaning your own gutters can lead to mishap – just some food for thought before you jump onto the roof this Autumn.

? Gutters are always up high and if you have never been onto a roof before, it can be quite unsettling to look down and see the ground below.
? To reach a gutter you need to approach it from either a ladder or from standing on the roof itself.

Essential ladder tips.

1. The ladder needs to be on a straight firm ground and secured to the roof. Winds, animals and nerves from heights can all lead to a shaky and falling ladder
2. As you finish each section of gutter you will need to unsecure the ladder, get down, move the ladder and begin the process again (and again) until you have completed the entire roof

? Gutters that do not have a quality gutter guard, such as The Leaf Man Gutter Guard will be full of decomposing material – leaves, twigs, debris and yes spiders and often vermin
? To clear valleys and other difficult to reach areas you will need to be on your roof – which requires the appropriate harnessing. Or more likely than not you will fall off the roof
? The weight of most adults will break roofs tiles – so you need to know where precisely to walk
? The roof is very slippery. Morning dew or rain will make the roof tiles impossible to walk on
The most cost effective way to keep your gutters clean and low maintenance is to have The Leaf Man Gutter Guard installed – and then you won’t have to worry about falling off the ladder!
Our best wishes to the gentleman in Kenshurst and to all of you with past gutter cleaning injuries.
