Cleaning Gutters

Cleaning Gutters: No More Leaves

Many of us don’t think about our homes roof that often, which means gutter protection and cleaning gutters often go unheard of. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be thinking about it though. Every home has gutters, which means everyone should be considering cleaning gutters whether or not, you plan to install gutter guards. If you don’t want to install gutter leaf protection, then you should be thinking about cleaning gutters even more often. If you do plan on installing some sort of gutter protection system then you will need to consider what you need to do in preparation for the installation. Installing gutter guards before cleaning gutters would be considered a somewhat ridiculous thing to do. After all, the purpose of the gutter leaf guards is to keep leaves out and allow water to run freely through your gutters. Placing gutter guards over the accumulated leaves and debris would not solve any water flow problem at all.

One of the most common occurences in gutters is when the leaves block the downpipes. This problem will eventually lead to water pooling in the gutters and spilling over onto the roof. If you have a steel roof, this could eventually lead to rusting, and the eventual leaking of water into the roof and in the internal structure of a home. If you were to install gutter guards, you could prevent this from happening, if you have taken the necessary steps in cleaning gutters before you have your guards installed.

Tips for Cleaning Gutters

  • When cleaning gutters, ensure you have a safe ladder. You’ll probably find a lot of decomposed leaves and possibly a number of bugs and spiders in the gutters. You need to clean all this out so you may wish to put on some gloves before putting your hands in the mess.
  • While you are cleaning gutters, you should check that all the spikes that are supposed to go through the gutter and into the rafter are in place. Sometimes these spikes can make their way out of the hole and if left without fixing you could find yourself in trouble later.
  • Check for any leaks that may be in your gutters. Stagnate water may hav caused rust and holes to appear in your gutters which will lead to further problems if left untreated. The rust should be removed completely and the holes filled.
  • Cleaning gutters may be best done with a pressure washer. You will just need to be careful which angle you hold the washer to ensure you don’t blow the gutters off.

Once you have completed cleaning gutters, then you will be ready to install your gutter guards. We, at The Leaf Man, will always check your gutters before installing gutter guards. If you would like any further information about our gutters guards, contact us at The Leaf Man Australia.
