Leaves in Gutter

Cleaning your gutters. It really doesn’t sound very appealing does it?

Honestly, could there be any household chore that sounds any less appealing. We didn’t think so. Cleaning the gutters requires, getting up on a ladder and sometimes, onto the roof. Then once you’re up there, you’ll find your company is handfuls of soggy leaves, twigs and other debris along with bugs and spiders which have all clogged up the gutters.

It doesn’t sound like a fun job, so why bother? Why can’t we just ignore it? Well, gutters were placed in buildings for a reason. They are a crucial part of the infrastructure of your home. Did you know they help keep your house dry and in good shape? Gutters are designed to collect rain from the room and guide it away from the house. This prevents the water from pooling around your home’s foundation and if you have a basement, it prevents flooding down there. If you don’t keep your gutters clean, they can’t do their job and you are putting your home at risk.

If you leave your gutters unchecked, it won’t take long for the twigs and leaves to begin to build up. You’ll also find that sometimes weed and fungus will begin to grown not only in the gutters but also in the roof. Ignoring your gutters is probably worse than having none at all. Leave them unattended and it could possibly lead to water damage to your roof. If they fill up with decaying organic material mixed with water, they can become very heavy. In some cases, this can become very extreme and the gutters will become so heavy that they begin to tear away from the house.

The best way to prevent this damage is to clean out your gutters at least twice per year. Once in the autumn and then again in the spring. Due to the falling leaves autumn is the time where the most leaves and debris will build up. If your home is completely surrounded by trees that drop a large number of leaves and branches, you will probably want to clean the gutters a lot more. However, there are many people out there who simply ignore gutter maintenance and think that nothing could ever go wrong. Don’t let that be you! Debris that fills our gutters often goes unnoticed because we are not constantly looking for it. It’s important we continue to check them and don’t overlook the maintenance required on them.

Everybody has trouble keeping up with the gutter cleaning, it’s not unusual for months to go by when you haven’t even thought about it. So perhaps it’s time to start thinking about getting some gutter guards. These will help to stop the leaves and debris from collecting in the gutters and will keep your home safe. The Leaf Man Gutter Guards cover the gutters keeping the leaves, twigs and other junk out of the way, while ushering the rain down the gutters, out the downspout and away from your home.

When you’ve chosen to get gutter guards, what do you need to do to prepare for gutter guard installation?

Whether you decide to install gutter guards yourself or if you have professional gutter guard installers do the work, you will need to get up on the roof and do the cleaning out of the gutters. It would be silly to install leaf guards over already clogged gutters, because they will never work properly if they are already blocked. Once you’ve cleaned them you’ll need to check that your gutters are working properly by taking the garden hose up to the roof and running water down the gutters to ensure it freely flows out of the downspouts.

Before you order any leaf guards you may wish to measure the length of gutters you’re your home. It’s always a good idea to measure these twice, just to be sure that you have measured correctly. If you are not comfortable with doing this yourself, simply request a consultation and a professional can do it for you.
